Middle School

For most people, middle school is a time of major transitions, and Todd was no exception. His classes focused less on "fun" subjects like art, and more on "serious" subjects like science and literature. There were still opportunities to indulge in the visual arts in schoolwork, but they were less common. A social studies report about baboon lifestyles, and illustrations from a science report about various kinds of cells, were among the few examples uncovered for this retrospective.
Another important item from this period was Todd's first encounter with digital media: a "portrait by computer" he had made at the Museum of Science and Industry on a field trip to Chicago. The equipment took the output of a video camera and rendered the shades of grey by overprinting standard characters on a dot-matrix lineprinter. Well, I'm sure it seemed cool at the time.
